Swap the Car for Cycling / Walking or an E-Scooter
Now is a good time to think of the future ‘us’ as well as the planet. Research by the University of Oxford and Imperial College (London) shows that ditching the car for walking or biking just one day a week makes a significant impact on personal carbon emissions. Friends of the Earth say “A fifth of that planet-warming pollution happens during journeys less than 5 miles – short journeys that could be made by foot or bike”. That’s added to the evidence of ‘active travel’ such as walking and cycling generating positive effects for personal physical and mental health.
One Gosport Ferry crossing (and we can carry up to 300 passengers) emits 9.32 kgs of Co2 compared to one diesel car emitting 5.88 kgs driving the 14.7 miles round to Portsmouth, or 5.13kg if the car takes unleaded fuel (based on 30 mpg).
As well as a dedicated deck for cycles and swapping the traffic jam view for a sea vista , our range of ticket options means that you don’t have to walk or cycle every day to benefit from discounted rates. The 10-trip book of tickets has no ‘use by’ dates for complete flexibility.
With the Government’s Cycle to Work scheme there are even work place tax incentives via your employer meaning you could save 25% to 39% on the purchase of a new bike and/ or accessories.
Portsmouth City Council have closed some roads to cars allowing more space for people to walk and cycle to their destinations in the City Centre and along the seafront. While Gosport Council has produced a map detailing on road and off road cycle lanes and tracks.

Or try a different commute to work – by e scooter! Part of a year long trial in Portsmouth (in partnership with Solent Transport), you can now pick up a rental e-scooter from the Hard Interchange in Portsmouth (next to the ferry terminal). All you need to do is download the app, register, & comply with certain criteria but they’re a novel method of getting from the ferry to work in a socially distanced way. Portsmouth City Council have a dedicated page on their website with more information on the E-Scooter Rental
