Responsibilities:

In order to provide day to day engineering and electrical support for the Port Captain who supervises the Company’s Marine Engineering Workshops, one of the key objectives necessary to operate a successful ferry operation is the day-to-day management for the repair and maintenance of the Company’s Fleet. This is further complemented when each vessel is dry-docked annually between September – May and repair works such as engine overhauls, underwater inspections and maintenance of propeller units, painting of the hull and superstructure, surveying and servicing of safety equipment are all carried out to the highest standards in order to obtain a Passenger Ship Safety Certificate from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

The Company is required by Regulation to comply with the Domestic Safety Management Code, which embraces the process for day-to-day repair and planned maintenance of plant and equipment on board vessels. The procedure for the handling of repairs is clearly documented in the Company’s Safety Management System Manual and are the responsibility of the Managing Director and Port Captain for all maintenance on board our vessels.

The Marine Fitter must be neatly presented and wear clean personal protective equipment, as provided by the company.

Main Duties:

To undertake any task required for the efficient running of the maintenance team.

Exercise due care and attention to work in a safe and efficient manner – having regard for your own safety and the safety of others.

Work closely with the Port Captain and his team to ensure that repairs of all reported defects are cleared as quickly as possible, immediately notifying the Port Captain of any incident or technical defect, which may delay a vessel sailing.

To undertake the safe operation of machinery, mechanical plant and vehicles.

Ensure work areas are always kept clean and tidy whilst maintaining a safe workplace.

To undertake workshop induction and training on plant and equipment operation.

Provide on-call support as part of the Duty Fitter roster.

Any other reasonable duties required for the safe running of the service.

Qualifications/ Education Required:

Preferred STCW Second Engineer less than 3,000kW III/3 or minimum STCW Engineer Officer of the Watch III/3 (OOW) Certificate of Competency.

Candidates with alternative marine engineering qualifications will be considered dependent upon experience.

Full clean UK driving licence.

Experience Required:

A minimum of 5 years’ experience required in the servicing and overhaul of marine engines, auxiliaries and propulsion units, together with a knowledge of electrical installations.

Preferred knowledge of:

A thorough knowledge of fault-finding techniques.

A broad level of tools would be preferred.

Arc and MIG welding and using oxyacetylene equipment would be an advantage, including minor fabrication work.

Will be required to update and maintain maintenance records as required.

Aptitude/ Skill Required:

The Marine Fitter is an integral member of the workshops team and as such must be able to demonstrate –
